The Catalan Public Health Care Service (CatSalut) guarantees health care cover for citizens as well as top-quality publicly funded services.
To be able to use the Catalan public health care system, you must have your own personal medical card. Do you know how to get hold of one?
Foreigners with permanent residency in Catalonia
If you are from abroad but you live in Catalonia you should:
- Register yourself with the local town hall.
- Check your right to health care, depending on your employment situation, through the National Institute for Social Security.
- Apply for your personal medical card at the Primary Healthcare Centre ( CAP ) that covers your area.
EU members staying here temporarily
EU members who change country within the EU for a maximum stay of 3 months must ask for a European Health-Insurance Card (HSE).
Non-EU citizens staying here temporarily
You must find out in your country of origin which documents you will require if you wish to benefit from the Catalan public health care system, otherwise you will have to pay for the costs of any health care you receive.
Illegal immigrants have no health-care cover except in emergencies or for child care, pregnancies and birth. They can get a one-year, renewable medical permit, when they prove 3 months of continuous residence in Catalonia and an income below that required for inclusion and social protection.
