Dedicated to health

Vall d’Hebron is a pioneering centre at the cutting edge of medical research in Catalonia and the health city is made up of various healthcare and research centres. The Vall d’Hebron University Hospital, in the Horta-Guinardó district, is among the top 20 hospitals in Spain for medical care and was widely acknowledged in 2003 for carrying out the first kidney transplant on a child weighing less than five kilos.

But besides the hospital, the health city encompasses a number of prestigious research centres, notably the Biomedical Research and Teaching Foundation, currently named the Vall d’Hebron Research Institute (VHIR). The institute’s main goal is to promote and foster scientific and technological knowledge, teaching and training at the Vall d’Hebron University Hospital and the Autonomous University of Barcelona, which it is attached to.

Vital work

Both the Vall d’Hebron Hospital, which opened in 1955, and the VHIR, set up in 1994, plus the other centres that make up the health city, can be regarded as essential public bodies in Barcelona that work for health and life every day.
