MUSICAL PERFORMANCE: “HABANERA CONCERT”, offered by Barca de Mitjana
TIME: 6:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.
LOCATION: MUSEUM GARDEN
DESCRIPTION: Many Catalans set off for the Americas starting in the mid-18th century and throughout the 19th century, emigrating to Cuba and entering into contact with their culture. Upon their return, these Catalan ex-emigrants, many of whom were sailors, felt nostalgia and began singing habaneras to remember the Caribbean. This musical genre became heavily rooted in some Catalan coastal villages and is still popular today.
Two songs are now essential in any habanera fest in Catalonia: La bella Lola, during which the audience waves handkerchiefs, and El meu avi, the chorus of which is sung by those watching.
There will be a burnt rum tasting. This beverage is traditionally served during habanera concerts and was often drunk by sailors in the mornings to fight the cold weather.
To end the day, the garden at Barcelona’s Museu Marítim will be filled with the smell of the sea, burnt rum and habaneras.
