This festival is a collective affirmation and vindication of national freedoms.

11 September 1714 marked the end of the Spanish War of Succession in Catalonia and the beginning of a period in which many freedoms were lost. The National Day of Catalonia remembers this defeat on the 11th of September, a day for vindication and active resistance against oppression.

The Generalitat and Parliament jointly organise the institutional events that are held to celebrate the day.

In recent years, celebrations have begun on the night of 10 September in many places in Catalonia. On this night, known as La Vigília, there are torch-lit processions, wreath-laying ceremonies and other cultural events.
